Base spare ammo for the Katana is only 10, upgraded to 11 with the Armor Pack and to 20 through research upgrades. It has a higher ammo capacity, with five rounds per clip, but a lower spare ammo capacity.
With a fire rate of 58 RPMs, this semi-automatic weapon has a moderate kickback and very low long-range accuracy. Against shields and barriers, however, it receives 1.5 percent bonus damage, which makes it more superior for close-range combat with biotics.
In comparison to the Eviscerator, the Katana's armor penetration is very low, with just one percent bonus damage. Usable by Jack, Grunt, Jacob and Tali, it also becomes available when other Shepard classes train in shotguns later in the game. It is made automatically available to a Vanguard or Soldier class Shepard upon launching the "Freedom's Progress" mission. It's highly effective against armored enemies, especially in comparison to the Geth Plasma Shotgun, which tends to be a better weapon overall. The Eviscerator violates numerous intergalactic weapons treaties, so it isn't distributed to military factions. However Shepard can get their hands on one through the Cerberus Weapons and Armor DLC pack. The M-22 Eviscerator, more formally known as the Lieberschaft 2180, was designed by a human civilian and has a unique modification that enhances its armor penetration.
